That earlier question about species prejudice got me thinking. I don't know if this is a question you can answer or just another pointless thing to think about.

See, believe it or not, in my world we've only got one "intelligent" species. By which I mean people who are tool-users to the point that our so-called reality is pretty much all just simplified, abstract symbols for things. We deal with symbols so much that many of us can go our whole lives without realizing that "the map isn't the same thing as the territory," as they say.

Being only one species, we have to make up reasons to hate each other. We're very good at it. We live in a universe of abstract symbols, and we turn each other into abstract symbols too.

So I was just wondering. Do you think that having real differences between groups of people instead of just manufactured ones, would mean more hate or less? Would seeing that different groups really do live in different worlds because of their different senses make people more in touch with the real world, or less?

I don't know. Maybe there isn't a real world. I think I'll stop blathering and get my coffee now.

How do ergonomics work? What does an ergonomic chair look like? Does a person "sitting" in such a work station actually incline forward on the support instead of sitting reclined against a backrest? Do chairs designed with backrests have central holes or split-backs for tails? Are there other considerations made for couches and other deep-seat furniture? What effects does this have for car seating? Bench seats may have a gap for tails but what about vehicles that preclude bench-style seating in its design like economy and sports cars?

How do musical instruments in SLOP differ from those generally "five-finger"-based varieties we have come to know and love? So far, I don't recall seeing any musical instruments in the story, but given the fact that hand configurations apparently vary dramatically among the different SLOP species, I can only imagine that this affects instrument design, and perhaps even the music itself as well (not to mention the variety of hearing-range differences that SURELY must be a factor in what SLOP music must sound like to us humans)...
