Somehow I don't think Tony Ray cares that much about keeping the kid alive. He isn't wildly fond of blueblood privilege, after all. If he can arrange for the kid to be a hero, then Daddy and the military will be pleased, and Tony Ray will be free of having to shepherd a screw-up.
What's that quote I think I've heard Tony Ray use? "Never make it easier for someone to kill you than to keep you alive."
Of course, we're in a story called Scene of the Crime. So I'm looking for the crime. Does tend to make one consider everyone in the story and how they'd fit in as the victim or the criminal.
