I never thought of Jen that way; I was always waiting for the to drop with . Admittedly my reasons are concerning Jen. Mulefoot put Jen in the story for a reason and he did a good job of making us all guess as to that reason. But Jen was incidental to Tony.
Rita is a purposeful, long-term commitment by Tony. Why? What does Tony gain from this relationship that is intimate but not sexual (or at least not overtly so). Tony sacrifices time and money for this relationship. To what end? I see with Rita the shades of Tony forcing himself to do right by Marian. I know there is no connection between the two canids but I can't help but to draw parallels between them based upon Tony's behavior.
It could be as you say that Mulefoot has been good at tricking us with his plot twists. Possibly this is another misleading characterization. That doesn't mean I'm not going to invest myself into the riskier elements of the story and see what pans out in the end.
