It's taboo to eat horse meat? Really? I don't think so. It's just illegal, like buying Cuban cigars. But I think that's getting away from the point you were trying to make. The animals in Slop are likely viewed by its denizens like how we view chimps, monkeys, and other simians. "Hey, here are some animals that are kinda' like us but not because they're still animals," is how I perceive it to be. Use to fulfill a need wins out over empathy. They would still get turned into food, beasts of burden, and pets without a thought or a care as to similarities.
