The following is a journey of a Cunni from the North. If you wish to discuss it, please use the topic "About Blue", if you wish to take part in it, please discuss it with me via PMs first. That being said...

Blue... Prelude

Sniffing the chill in the air, Runs With Stick walked out of her cabin to greet the rising sun and perform her daily ritual of thanking Mother Earth for her continued well being and asking the sun for guidance.

Having finished her morning ritual, she walked back into her cabin and looked around. Seeing the backpack brought a smile to her face. Another successful run across the northern border and another backpack full of currency.

Still smiling she saw the letter on the table. "This too is good news." she thought.

Picking it up she re-read her instructions while memorizing the face of the coyano male in the accompanying picture. "So, you're next eh? You must be pretty important for them to send me to meet with you."

Runs With Stick sat at the table honing her cleaver. Slowly sliding the stone across the edge, talking to it as she worked. "You were my father's. You were his father's before that. Now you are mine. Blessed are the spirits that live within you and guide me in your proper use."

Satisfied with the edge, Runs With Stick gathers up the bundle of indamo leaves she had collected the day before and slowly chops them into small pieces. Dropping them into a kettle of boiling water and lye, she wrinkles her nose at the pungent odor and smiles again.

Two days later, Runs With Stick again takes the cleaver and chops the dried cake into smaller pieces, slowly mashing them and griding them into powder. She knows that she has prepared it correctly, a small tear forms at the corner of her eye. "Damn it, why did you shit eating mongrels have to hunt us down and slaughter us?"

Stirring the embers a bit, Runs With Stick places the envelope and it's contents in the fire. As it curls, and burns, she sprinkles a bit of the blue powder on it. After the fire burned itself out, Runs With Stick takes a bit of the ashes and rubs them into the dark patch of fur over her heart. "Sister Moon, help keep this secret with me until my death."

That evening while standing in line she looks at the ticket for Flying Hooves. "Another 36 hours on a fucking bus..Mother help me I hate fucking buses. But I have to act like I know my place."

The journey begins...

Keeping her eyes downcast, Runs With Stick boarded the bus and slowly walked to the rear. "They think I'm trash, but I know the back is the easiest to watch from."

She relaxed a bit as she felt her package sitting on her lap. Gently probing, she took inventory of the items she needed on this assignment. Satisfied that everything was in order, Runs With Stick turned her attention to the other passengers.

It was the usual collection of the castoffs of society. Those that could afford no other form of transportation. Or the ones that never stayed in one place for long. She smiled inwardly again "Nothing I can't handle."

It was past midnight when the bus slowed to a stop. Runs With Stick looked up and saw that there were no lights to be seen outside. Tensing up, she waited to see what happened next.

A pair of Reynards climbed aboard, their uniforms a sharp contrast to the generally shabby appearance of everyone else on the bus.

"Papers please. Please have your identification ready to show."

Runs With Stick pulled out her card and stared at it. Ruth Pawstone. "Mother save me." How she hated that name. "Typical mongrel bastards, even her own name wasn't good enough for them."

She stiffened up as a commotion towards the middle brought her to attention. One of the officers was escorting a pregnant coyana off the bus in handcuffs. "Filthy whores, all they know how to do is breed."

"No more interruptions for a while" she thought, and with that, forced herself to drift into a light sleep.

The sky was already light when she woke up to the bus pulling into another way stop. Runs With Stick waited until the bus was empty and slowly made her way to the front. Pausing outside the building, she faced the rising sun and gave thanks to Mother Earth.

Runs With Stick looked up at the clock on the wall. "By this time tomorrow, I will be in Lockhart. And then we shall see won't we."

"Most folks think that all Flying Hooves bus stations look the same and to and to any casual observer, that's true." said the goat taking the seat beside gray and brown furred cunni girl. The casual observer probably picked up on her unfriendliness and so avoided her. Cinnamon colored critter removed his powder blue corduroy sports jacket and then slid past Runs With Stick. His coronoado scut flashed in front of her blunt bunny face, making her wrinkle her nose.
"But really the stations come in three basic types with different appointments according to what decade they were built." He said, trying to share the arm rest. "This one is just like the one in Hewitt and and Tawniekenket...harvest gold with orange Bakelite seats...yellow and rust brown asphalt tiles. Classic 70's, really. Now the other stations on this route are mostly the mid-size models built in the 60's. They have that signature zig-zag roof and the big vertical sign. I love'm. Bus is the only way to travel. You know, I get to talk to the most interesting people on these trips."
The older coronado stops talking for a moment and only a moment. "I'm so sorry. How rude of me. I'm Smitty Pizbeard. Now where was I? Oh yeah...the stations along this route were mostly built in the 60's though once we get to the big terminal...that one was rebuild different than the rest because of that big chain reaction bus explosion in 88. Do you remember that? The 80's were something weren't they..."
His words blend into a steady buzz no different than the hum of the engine except for when his elbow pushes yours off the arm rest.

Runs With Stick tensed up in her seat in reaction to the unwelcome intrusion. "Mother help me, doesn't this thing ever bathe?"

She sat there listening to what sounded like a hive of bees buzzing, picking up a word or two here and there.

"Bee hive" she thought...and smiled at the image of him tied to the ground and covered with honey knowing what would come next and how long it would take.

Runs With Stick turned and faced her new companion and smiled sweetly.

"Much as it would please me to gut you like a fish and roast you slowly over a fire, I have more important things to do, so you're safe for the time being."

"There, that should give old pissbeard something to think about for awhile." she thought and turned forward again.

The coranado wrinkled his cinnamon colored nose in distate and a little bit of confusion. "Fish..I'd never eat the flesh of any animal, roasted or not. I don't care what they say about protein being protein. Must be part of that whole First Peoples thing you're doin'. The look really suits you." The old buck puffed out his chest. "If I were younger...and your ears were shorter...or mine longer..."

"Say...its not roasted fish guts...but its still high in omega-3 fatty acids." said the caprine reaching into his coat pocket. "Want some Sweetflax crunchies?" He holds up a plastic sandwich bag stuffed with molasses baked flaxseed chips. They're all crushed and the fines have settled to the bottom of the bag. "Some sweets for the sweet Indigenous cutey Cunnigirl?"

Rest stop...

A thought was forming in Runs With Stick's mind. "He really does mean well."

She turned slightly towards him and listened to him ramble on about everything.

It was dark by the time they pulled into Muleshoe.

Runs With Stick smiled and said, "Smitty, I apologize for my behavior previously. I would like to make it up to you. In fact, I've always found older men to be more attractive. They seem to be much better at pleasing a woman."

She paused to see what the effect was and leaned a bit closer to him and whispered, "Follow me."

Runs With Stick took his hand and led him towards the restroom, as she opened the door, "Give me a minute then follow me in."

She could hear his heart rate increase along with his breathing. Even his scent changed with her last remark.

Taking a quick look around to make sure she was by herself, she slipped out of her dress and stood on the toilet, wrapping her hands around the pipe behind her head.

Runs With Stick waited, "I hope he hasn't dropped dead of a heart attack."

The door opened and she could see the look on his face as he realized what he was looking at. A naked girl with her knees spread apart. "Come here Smitty, want some Cunni pie?"

His face was about two feet from her when she thrust her feet into his chest and threw him across the short room into the wall.

Runs With Stick picked up the old Coronado and placed him on the toilet. Pausing she felt for a pulse. "You're still breathing old man, and you'll live, but you won't feel like fucking when you wake up."

After pulling her dress back on, she took off Smitty's belt, looping it around the pipe and his neck to keep him upright. Taking his bandanna out of his pocket, Runs With Stick wedged it into his mouth, tying the ends to hold it in place. As a final gesture she pulled his pants down around his ankles.

Runs With Stick boarded the bus, and keeping her eyes downcast, returned to her seat at the rear. "Mother help me, I will be in Lockhart tomorrow and needed some quiet so I can rest before I arrive."

Back in the restroom, the driver relieved himself of the coffee he had drank on the way down. Hearing the grunting and scuffling of feet in the stall next to him he thought, "Sorry buddy, sounds like you need more fiber in your diet."

Dreams in the dark...

Runs With Stick sat in the darkness and thought about many things as the bus made it's way towards Lockhart.

She tried to sleep, but her thoughts kept returning to Silver Two Trees.

They had made quite the team on the border runs. The perfect pair it was said about them. Leaving messages for each other via piles of stones arranged in various patterns. The usual things like wait here, tomorrow, or to your left etc.. But her favorite was coming home and finding the one that meant "I'm waiting" on the trail to her cabin.

They had grown together to the point where they had even discussed marriage. But it had always been, "Just this last job, and we'll settle down together."

Runs With Stick smiled, "He wasn't like the other Cunni, he never passed out immediately afterwards."

Then he went missing a year ago.

"Mother help me, I miss him so."

June 1943 on an island somewhere out in the western ocean....

Fires At Night read the letter he had received earlier:

My dearest husband, you have a baby boy. He has your eyes. I've named him Running Blue Water. As soon as I get the picture from the nurse I'll send it to you. Although the distance between us is great, in my heart you will always be near me. Your loving wife, Greets The Morning.

He refolded the letter and put it back in his shirt pocket with the others.

"Pawstone, get your furry ass over here on the double. The Lieutenant has another message for you to send in that gibberish you hopfeet use."

Fires At Night ran, keeping his head down, and settled in next to the radio officer. "Yes sir."

That was the last thing he said.

Several weeks later, Greets The Morning put Running Blue Water down to play with some sticks so she could answer the knock on her cabin door.

"Mrs. Pawstone, I am sorry to inform you that your husband has been killed in action. Please sign this form for his personal effects and accept our condolences."

Greets The Morning sat down at her table, laid her head across her hands and cried.

The next morning, after thanking Mother Earth and asking the Sun for guidance, she gathered the courage to look inside the box the Officer from the War Department had left.

Inside, she found his wallet with the picture they had taken at their wedding, his ID tags, the corporal stripes he earned, his cleaver, his wishing stone and the small bag of indamo powder. Additionally she found the small wooden box with the medals the Government had awarded him for bravery and courage under fire. Lastly, she found the small bundle of letters she had sent him. Every one of them. Seeing the hole through the middle of the packet she broke down and cried.

Running Blue Water's pulling on her dress brought her back to the present. Looking into his eyes and seeing the eyes of Fires At Night she says, "It's ok my son, your mother is through crying now."

1972 at the cabin

Trouble had been brewing for months at Broken Knee when another Cunni tribe had reclaimed territory from the Federals.

Runs With Stick awoke to the argument between her grandmother and father.

"Why do you have to be involved with this?"

"Because they are our brothers Grandmother."

She was a bit confused by this, as she thought she didn't have any uncles.

"You will get yourself killed for nothing."

"I am not going to be fighting Grandmother, I will be packing in food and medicine."

"But why you? Are there no other Cunni left to do this?"

"Because I am very good at what I do Grandmother."

Runs With Stick smiled, she had been camping with her father. She thought he knew everything about the land.

"What are we supposed to do when you leave? Why do you insist on doing this?"

"Because it is what my father would have done."

Runs With Stick curled up in her blanket and fell asleep remembering the stories she had heard of her grandfather.

The next morning after thanking Mother Earth and asking the Sun for guidance, Runs With Stick sat at the table eating breakfast as her father finished packing.

Running Blue Water held out his arms and waited for her to grab his neck before picking her up.

"You're becoming a big girl now Daughter. Help your mother and grandmother while I'm gone. I'll write and let you know I'm ok."

"Say hello to my uncles, ok Father?"

"Uncles?"

"I heard you say they were your brothers last night."

Running Blue Water smiled and set her back down. "I will say hello to all of them for you."

The letters arrived about once a month or so.

After a year, they stopped coming...

Rumors were heard that supporters of the Federals had ambushed the people bringing in supplies.

A funeral parlor in Lockhart

The phone on his desk rings...

"Yes?"

"I see. Thank you."

Hector sets the phone down and turns to his operations manager.

"We have another coffin full of goods coming tomorrow morning. See to it that it arrives safely."

"Si El Heffe"

Hector pulls a cigar from the humidor on his desk.

"I ran across these when I first started this business. They were a gift from a customer."

His manager sat quietly, forcing a smile. "Tu Caron, not this story again..."

"Senor, I must attend to the details of the shipment, please excuse me."

Hector smiles, "It's ok Carlos, I understand. Oh, and we'll need another volunteer to put in the box after we unload it."

Placing his feet on the desk, he leans back and reminices while lighting his cigar. "Fourty years in this business, life is good."

El Oso...

Carlos ducks into the bar and waits for his eyes to adjust. Hearing the giggle of women and several rude remarks by a male he knows that Chavo is here.

Walking over to the table Carlos says, "Lose the almejas."

The women knew it was time to leave. One of them still had a slight limp from the last time she hadn't moved fast enough.

"Senior Carlos, how nice to see you. Join me for a drink?"

"We do not have time for such foolishness. You need to find another volunteer for El Heffe."

"Amigo, why are you such a tight ass?"

"Because I am paid to be. And you are being paid to do your job, not chase women and drink."

Carlos rose from the table, walked back to the door and thought to himself. "One of these days, that fool is going to wake up missing pieces."

1978 the cabin...

Runs With Stick tried not to fidget in her chair as she waited for her mother and grandmother.

"Today is very important my daughter. You are no longer a girl, you are a young woman."

Shining Moon Star set the cleaver on the table. "You have learned how this is used to prepare food and turn the indamo leaves into our ceremonial dye. Now it is time for you to learn what else it is used for."

Greets The Morning stood up and explained, "We are prey species, and this has always been so, as it is the wish of our Creator. However, there are times when we are also the predator. What happens why we die Granddaughter?"

Remembering her lessons Runs With Stick answered, "We cross the bridge into heaven Grandmother."

"And what happens if we do not have both feet?"

"We are stuck forever between life and death Grandmother."

Greets The Morning smiled and sat down.

Shining Moon Star lifted the cleaver and spoke to it. "You were my husband's and you were his father's before you. Blessed are the spirits that live within you. Guide us in your proper usage."

She handed the cleaver to Runs With Stick. "Many of us have died at the hands of others." She paused, "Many of those that have hunted us have died by our hands, all of them have been sent on their final journey with their right foot missing."

Greets The Morning stood up again, holding the bag of indamo powder. "The color blue is worn when we face death Granddaughter. We keep it with us at all times as a reminder that Death is always nearby. And how is it used?"

Runs With Stick leaned forward, "It is worn on our cheeks when we face death Grandmother. It is to show we are brave and do not fear the inevitable. After death, it is sprinkled in our mouth so that we may tell death we are on our final journey. It is sprinked in our eyes so that we may see the way to heaven."

Greets The Morning hung the bag of indamo powder around he granddaughter's neck. "May Mother Earth bless you and the Sun guide you in life dearest one."

1980 Outpost Cafe

Runs With Stick looked up over the counter and watched the trucker walk into the cafe. "Mother help me, not this asshole again." She grabbed her order pad and waited for his usual tirade.

Clarence slammed his fist on the counter. "Service, I want service. Can't you snowshoes move any faster than that?"

She just smiled and waited for him.

"Let me see... Coffee, I want some coffee, and none of that crap that's been sitting for three hours."

"The coffee's fresh, it just finished brewing a few minutes ago."

Runs With Stick thought about pouring it in his lap, then reminded herself that this was the only honest job to be had in these parts.

"Grilled fish, that looks simple enough for the likes of you to handle."

"Will there be anything else sir?"

"Yeah, make sure you don't get no hopfoot hair in it. It's bad enough I got hopfoot hair in my grill."

She double checked the grill before putting the fillets on it, "There's no hair on the grill, what's he going on about this time?"

Runs With Stick thought about her friend Silver Two Trees instead of that obnoxious trucker. "I know mother doesn't approve of him, but he makes me feel special."

"About damned time, I could have starved to death in the time it took you to make this."

"Will there be anything else sir?"

"Self control." That's what her grandmother kept telling her. "Don't get mad, get even. We Cunnis are very proud of our history as prey species. Self control is what allows us to turn predator and deal with our enemies effectively."

Clarence wiped his muzzle with the back of his hand, threw some money on the counter and walked out of the cafe laughing. "Hopfoot hair, that's a good one!"

Runs With Stick put the money in the drawer and started her routine of closing up for the night. "Mother help me."

She was about finished when Sam walked in. "Good evening officer, can I get you some fresh coffee?"

"Yes thank you, but you'd better get some for yourself and sit down, I have some bad news for you."

Runs With Stick sat down on a stool next to Sam and waited for him to speak.

"There's been a hit and run out on the highway, I'm pretty sure it's your mother and grandmother. It's just a formality, but you need to identify them."

She dropped her coffee on the floor and just sat there. "Mother help me..."

1980 The Cabin

With the rising of the sun, Runs With Stick went outside to give thanks to Mother Earth and ask the Sun for guidance.

It had been several weeks since the funeral. It had all run together like a bad dream. Identifying them, putting the Indamo power in their eyes and mouth. Sam had told her that they died instantly. Thank Mother that their feet were still attached.

Runs With Stick took out the box she had found in her grandmothers dresser.

Carefully she spread the contents out on the table. She had known about the letters and medals, but she picked up the necklace made with tiny bones.

"Grandmother told me that these are from the feet of our enemies." She ran her fingers over them, some of them were quite old."I will wear this in honor of you Greets The Morning."

Runs With Stick sat there quietly, trying to focus on the diary. She brushed the tears from her eyes and read. "Dearest Granddaughter, I know that if you are reading this, my prayers have been answered, I have not had to see the death of another family member."

The knock at the door brought her back to the present. "Come in, it's open."

Silver Two trees walked in, "I just heard, I came as soon as I found out, is there anything I can do for you?"

Runs With Stick rose slowly and dropped her dress to the floor. It was the first time she had been naked in front of him. "Come to bed with me. I don't want to be alone."

It had been a month since the loss of her family, "We are prey, death is always nearby." Rather than justify what had happened, it only served to strengthen her resolve to turn predator.

Runs With Stick looked up as the door opened, it was the owner.

"Good afternoon Roger, the usual?"

He smiled and sat down in the one booth the cafe had.

"You are such a dear, if I had family, I would want to have a daughter like you."

She brought him a large cup of mint tea and a slice of berry pie. "Shush, the neighbors would talk, 'She doesn't look anything like him'"

They both laughed at that, then turned as the door opened again.

Runs With Stick felt her cheek warm a bit as Silver Two Trees walked in.

Roger spoke first, "Come over here and join us. We have business to discuss."

"Can I get you something?"

"Just a hug." He laughed as she slid in next to him and delivered his order.

Roger took a sip of his tea and explained, "In addition to this cafe, I have another business I run. Much more profitable I might add. Your friend here has been working for me for the past two years."

"Like me, she is alone now, and I think she would be an excellent co-worker."

"What exactly would I be doing Sir?"

"Well, for the most part, running packages across the Northern border."

Runs With Stick thought about that for a moment. "Mother help me, what am I getting involved in?"

'"Will I be working alone?"

"No, for the first year or so, you'll be working with your friend here as you learn the routes and get introduced to the others."

"Is it dangerous?"

Silver Two Trees spoke in response, "We are Cunni, Death is always nearby, but the Creator has allowed the we be predators as well. I will train you myself."

Runs With stick fingered the bones of the necklace she wore and thought about that bastard trucker. "I would consider it an honor that you have asked me, I accept your offer."

Roger smiled, "Go home and gather your things, your friend will be along shortly, I will run the cafe in your absence."

They watched as Runs With Stick walked out the door.

"Ya know, it's almost a good thing that incident with the trucker happened."

Silver Two Trees tensed up and got nose to nose with Roger, "If you ever say that again, I will feed you your foot piece by piece."

Silver Two Trees motioned for her to stop and get down, then pointed down the hill.

"Do you see those two crouched over there?"

She looked up and answered quietly. "Yes."

"They are Border Patrol, we have always made it a point to avoid them even if it means going around."

Runs With Stick nodded, "Are there others out here?"

"Trust no one. Except for them and the occasional trapper, nobody really has a legitimate reason for being out here."

It was a stark reminder that she was out here on business, and not camping with her father.

"So we go back and wait?"

"Tomorrow we will try going a few miles to the east."

She smiled at him, "I think you did this on purpose so you could spend an extra night with me."

Silver Two Trees laughed quietly, "Now is not the time for that."

Runs With Stick sniffed the air, "We are not alone." Moving quietly, she circled around back to where they had eaten breakfast earlier.

Silver Two Trees sat with his hands behind his head staring at the intruder.

"Well well, look what I caught. Lucky for one of us don't ya think?"

He just smiled, having spotted Runs With Stick moving up behind the sheller.

"Pretty relaxed for someone about to become a bootliner aren't you?"

"We are Cunni, Death is always nearby."

She swung the piece of wood and hit the otter across the side of his head.

"Are you ok?"

"I'm fine"

"He would have killed you."

Silver Two Trees rolled him over and went though his pockets. "He is just another poacher, nobody will miss him."

"He meant to kill you, I will take care of him."

He knelt down beside the intruder and watched as she took the cleaver and Indamo and sat them on the ground.

Kneeling beside them she said, "You were my Father's and his Father's before him. Blessed are the Spirits that live within you, Guide me in your proper use."

Runs With Stick raised the cleaver above her head, "Mother help me." Then brought it down quickly severing the right foot from the intruder.

She turned and placed a knee across the otter's chest listening to his screams.

"Your screams are in vain, no one is listening to you. You have sought to harm us, and for this you shall pay."

Runs With Stick waited until the last of his life flowed out from his leg.

She sprinkled the Indamo is his mouth, "This is so that you may speak to Death on your eternal journey."

Moving her hand over his face to put the powder in his eyes, "And this is so that you may see that which is denied to you."

Standing up, she touched her Grandmother's necklace, "Another bone to remind others we are Cunni."

They picked up their belongings and headed north. Silver Two Trees spoke after a while.

"The animals will attend to him."

1981 Back at the cabin

Silver Two Trees laid a large sheet of paper out on the table.

"We've done this for a year now, draw the routes and the locations on this piece of paper."

Runs With Stick smiled and started to map their routes. "Testing me?"

"Yes."

After she had finished, he studied the map, noted that everything was as it should be and placed the paper in the fireplace.

As the paper curled, Runs With Stick sprinkled a bit of the Indamo powder on it. After it had been completely consumed, she gathered a bit of the ashes.

As they both rubbed a bit of the ashes in their fur, they spoke in unison, "Sister Moon, help keep this secret with me until my death."

They sat in silence for a moment, then Runs With Stick stood up and dropped her dress to the floor. "Is it time?"

Silver Two Trees laughed and followed her to the bed, dropping his clothing along the way, "It is time."

1981 Pleasing one another

The run had been uneventful. Except for the nature of their business, it would have been just another vacation in the wilderness.

Runs With Stick turned to Silver Two Trees, "Are you pleased with me?"

"I am pleased with everything about you."

She felt her cheeks warming a bit. "You know, you're rather pleasing yourself."

He thought about that bit where she placed her hands behind her head and held onto the tree lifting her legs. Now it was his turn to feel his cheeks warming. "What possessed you to get into that position?"

She laughed, "It was time and there were too many rocks on the ground."

They walked on in silence.

Finally Silver Two Trees spoke again, "I have some business to attend to when we get back."

"Does it involve me?"

"In way, it does. But I must attend to it myself."

Runs With Stick nodded, everyone has secrets, even from themselves. "I understand, will you be gone long?"

"I doubt it will be for more than a week."

"So I will have an entire week to think of new ways to please you?"

They both laughed at that and increased their pace the last mile back down to the cabin.

Late 1981, Information

As she walked home from the diner, Runs With Stick spotted the pile of stones on the trail leading to her cabin.

She knew immediately they meant "I am waiting" and looked up to see the wisp of smoke from her chimney.

"Mother help me, I know what I want it to mean, but it is best to remain cautious." as she convinced herself to only walk faster and not break into a run.

Placing her hand on the latch, she caught the scent of Silver Two Trees. "He is back..."

Runs With Stick opened the door.

"Welcome home."

She ran to him and embraced him. "I missed you."

"I missed you too, but you were always with me in my heart."

"Did you accomplish your mission?"

He started to speak, but she put her hand over his mouth, "Now is not the time for that."

He knew what was more important for both of them.

Afterwards, he turned towards her and spoke, "I accomplished my mission. I located Clarence."

Runs With Stick tensed up immediately, "Is he..."

"He is alive, I have located a truck stop he frequents. I will attend to him for you if you wish."

She sat up, her eyes ablaze with the reflection of the fireplace, "No, he is mine."

"He is a badger, are you sure you can handle him?"

A slight hesitation, "You have trained me well, and I am Cunni, I must do this myself."

He nodded, "I understand."

Runs With Stick laid back down and wrapped herself around her companion. "We will discuss this in the morning."

1982 A truck stop in East Arikara

Runs With Stick sat in the darkness at the truck stop. "Mother help me."

She thought about that night two years ago in the diner as she rubbed a bit of Indamo into her cheek fur.

It had taken her a couple of days to walk and hitch hike to this place, and another day of waiting for that bastard trucker. Now he was inside stuffing his face.

Runs With Stick slowly felt the tires on the passenger side of the truck. Pausing at the one with the retread she smiled, "This will do." as she cut into the sidewall.

She walked back into the darkness and waited.

Runs With Stick slipped out next to the highway and ran after the truck as it headed west.

Clarence swore loudly as the tread separated from the casing, "Damn lazy bastards, I should have known they'd sell me a rotten tire back there."

He eased the truck over to the shoulder to see which tire came apart this time.

He was struggling to remove the tire when Runs With Stick came up behind him.

"Need a hand Mister?"

"Yeah, lazy bastards sold me a piece of crap tire, son of a bitch blew on me...push on that handle there so I can get my hand under this."

She knelt down working the jack handle to raise it, "Like this?"

Clarence grabbed the tire from the top and bottom to rock it off of the studs.

Runs With Stick released the jack so that his hand was pinned to the dirt below it.

"What the fuck do you think you're doing? Get this damn tire off of me!"

She stepped back a bit, "We need to talk first."

"Who the hell are you?"

"I am Runs With Stick, I work at the Outpost Cafe."

"What's that got to do with anything, get this fucking tire off of me."

"That was my Mother and Grandmother you ran down on the highway."

His tone changed immediately, "That was an accident, I swear it, I thought they were coyotes."

"Do not lie to me, you were laughing about hopfoot hair in your grill."

Anger had shifted to panic, "What do you want? Money? I have money."

Runs With Stick set the cleaver and Indamo on the ground.

Kneeling beside them she said, "You were my Father's and his Father's before him. Blessed are the Spirits that live within you, Guide me in your proper use."

"What the hell do you think you're doing?"

Runs With Stick raised the cleaver above her head, "Mother help me." Then brought it down quickly severing the right foot from the trucker.

She turned and placed a knee across the his chest listening to his screams.

"Your screams are in vain, no one is listening to you. You have killed my Mother and Grandmother, and for this you shall pay."

Runs With Stick waited as his screams grew fainter then stopped altogether.

She sprinkled the Indamo is his mouth, "This is so that you may speak to Death on your eternal journey."

Moving her hand over his face to put the powder in his eyes, "And this is so that you may see that which is denied to you."

Standing up, she touched her Grandmother's necklace, "We are Cunni, my family can rest now."

Runs With Stick looked up to see Roger walk into the cafe.

"Good evening Roger, can I get you anything?"

"Just some of that excellent mint tea."

Roger sat at the counter and waited for his tea.

She smiled and set the cup in front of him.

"Any thing else?"

"Just one thing, I heard about that trucker out in East Arikara."

Runs With Stick fingered the new bone in her necklace. "Mother help me."

Roger smiled, "I figured something like that was going to happen sooner or later."

"I'm sorry sir..."

"That's ok, I fully understand....Just don't do anything else to draw unnecessary attention to us."

"It won't happen again."

Roger sipped his tea, "Oh, one other thing, tell Silver Two Trees I have another run for the two of you."

He started to rise, then sat back down again. "Come to think of it, how about a slice of that excellent berry pie of yours?"

Runs With Stick thought, "Well, at least that's over with now" as she cut a slice of pie and set the plate in front of her boss.

1973 Broken Knee

Running Blue Water sat with the others, "I don't like the feel of this."

"Why not?"

"We are being watched."

"What difference should that make? We are just running supplies."

"There are those on the council that would want us removed."

"Do all of you that old think like scared children?"

"We are Cunni, Death is always nearby. But that doesn't mean we should run to greet Him."

At the first sounds of rifle fire, everyone scattered.

Running Blue Water felt the first round go through his shoulder, spinning him around.

After that there was just silence.

Runs With Stick looked up and waved, "Good evening Roger, you have a package from Lockhart."

"Not before you get me some of that mint tea."

She smiled and set the package and the tea on the counter.

Roger took a sip of his tea as he opened the package, "Hopefully, this is good news from my friend."

"Shit...."

Runs With Stick looked in the package to see a face staring back at her. "Mother help me..."

Roger set the note on the counter, "We do not do business with cavadores."

"I served with him in Thaikong."

She reached across the counter, putting her hand on his shoulder, "This will not go unpunished, I will personally take care of the one's responsible."

Roger pushed the box away and put his head down on his hands, "I know you will, but first you have another run to make. I will gather up what information I have and send it to you."

1965 Tak Do, Thaikong

After a week out on patrol Black Shadow Bear was looking forward to the relative quiet of the base. Being a radio operator had it's advantages. Foremost, they called him Roger instead of Mayflower.

The next morning he was awoken to the sergeant yelling "Mayflower, on the double, the Captain wants to see you."

Half running, half stumbling, he made his way to the commander's and knocked on the edge of the doorway, "Sir? Mayflower reporting."

"Sit down son, I have some bad news."

Roger sat and waited for the Captain to speak again.

"You're being sent home."

"Sir? Mac and I paid for the jeep we destroyed."

The Captain just raised an eyebrow, "No, this has nothing to do with that. I'm sorry to have to inform you that your parents have been killed."

Roger swore under his breath, "Shit."

"Was there anything else Sir?"

"Son, I'm sorry, I don't have any other details. I've double checked with our Chaplain, he is familiar with your customs if you need to speak with someone. Here are your orders, you can catch the next transport out of here."

It had taken Roger two weeks to get home and find out what had happened.

Greets The Morning had attended to the funeral and made sure the Cunni rituals had been properly followed. Running Blue Water had cleaned up the cafe and removed all traces of what had happened.

None of it made any sense at all. The police said it was some drifter. He shot both his mother and father and stole the money in the register. The only consolation he had was that he was subsequently killed in a confrontation with the police.

Roger sighed as he sat at his father's desk in the back of the cafe, "We are Cunni, Death is aways nearby."

Greets The Morning walked out of the cabin and approached Running Blue Water, "My son, you have a baby daughter."

"Can I?"

"Yes, everything is fine now."

Running Blue Water rushed inside and stood next to the bed looking down at his wife and daughter.

"You don't mind?"

"How could I mind, she is ours."

Shining Moon Star looked at her husband, "I knew you wanted a boy."

"Worry not beloved Wife, the Creator has deemed to bless us with a daughter, and so this is how it shall be."

"What shall we name her?"

He thought for a moment and said, "She shall be known as Runs With Stick."

Greets The Morning touched her son on the shoulder.

"Please forgive me Mother, all fathers want sons, as do all mothers want daughters. Do you think she'll have my eyes?"

"It is too soon to tell, but I suspect she has your eyes, the same as your Father's."

Running Blue Water smiled and sat on the edge of the bed.

"Son, I will sleep in the chair next to the fire, you can have my bed, your wife is tired and needs to sleep now."

The next morning he joined his mother outside to greet the sun, "Mother Earth, than you for our continued well being. And may the Sun give us guidance."

"Go now, I know you want to run down to the cafe and tell your friend Black Shadow Bear. I will care for your wife."

Item in a local newspaper.

Clarence Smith died last month in an unfortunate accident involving a flat tire. Local authorities were quoted as saying, "Apparently the jack he was using failed, and as he laid pinned to the ground by his hand, a wild animal tore off his foot."

In my investigation as to how this could have happened, I came to find out that he was a bit of a local legend of sorts. A bad one. Everyone I talked to refused to let me use their name, but they all said about the same thing.

"He's dead? Are you sure?"

"He never had anything nice to say about anyone, I'm glad he's dead."

"If I had known, I'd have taken his other foot."

Even the local authorities didn't think too highly of him. "We've learned to leave him alone when he's parked on the side of the road, one of our officers still has a scar from the time he tried to rouse him."

Further investigation turned up an incident from a couple of years ago where he was questioned about his involvement in a hit and run incident in West Arikara.

If it's any consolation to this reporter, at least Mr. Smith is in a better place now.

Lockhart

Miguel knew it was hard work, but what was a old Coyano to do these days. Chavo had told him he would make enough money to live up here and have enough left over to send back down to his wife.

He laughed, a teeny bit of Mescal to take the edge off at night is all he needed these days.

Miguel headed into the bunk house to find Chavo and see what his job was going to be today.

"Aw come on Roger, why do you let that kid hang around here?"

"You know as well as I do Mac, his parents died of the fever last year."

"So?"

"We've been over this a dozen times already. When he's old enough he can work for us."

"Yeah, right, so I have to put up with him for another, what, 5 years?"

"Mac, we'll both be over 30 by then. You think I want to spend the rest of my life running across the border?"

"Well, I ain't training him."

"You won't have to, I'll train him."

They both stopped when they heard the door open.

"Silver Two Trees, we were just talking about you, come on in and have a seat."

"Hi Roger., Hi Mac. Can you tell me about the jeep again?"

Mac laughed and thought to himself, "If I'm not careful. I'm going to end up liking that kid."

"Ok Sport, it's like this, Roger and and I stole a jeep with the idea of sneaking back behind our lines to steal a bunch of beer. The problem was, we were both drunk at the time and ran it off of a bridge."

Roger added, "Then we got the bright idea to steal a truck to drag the jeep back up onto the road."

"Who's telling this story?"

Roger laughed, "Go right ahead Mac."

"Well anyway, we get back to where we left the jeep and got the truck stuck in the mud."

"That's when we asked one of the APC drivers for help."

Mac glared at Roger.

"Sorry."

"We got the truck back on the road, and were just getting the cable hooked onto the jeep when the Captain showed up."

Silver Two Trees started laughing, "Is this when the jeep blew up?"

Roger laughed "No, it wasn't until after we both had to explain to the Captain what we were up to. The Captain said that because we brought back enough to share with everyone he wouldn't write us up this time."

Mac added, "It was when we got the jeep about half way back up the hill, it must have hit a mine or something because it blew up."

"Yeah, 20 cases of beer and a jeep destroyed."

"The only thing the Captain said was, You're paying for the jeep."

After they all stopped laughing, Roger went behind the counter to fix dinner for everyone.

El Oso's

Chavo sat and watched as Carlos headed back outside. "Asno apretado...."

"Mmmm, what's this?"

Runs With Stick walked in and headed to the bar. "Senor, I hear you're looking for a cook."

"What do you know about cooking for Coyanos?"

"My grandmother used to work for a large Coyano family." Runs With Stick smiled as she thought "they always like to hear when someone else is beneath them."

"We cater to working men."

Runs With Stick nodded, "So, you want food that sticks to their ribs not their bellies then."

With that, the bartender laughed and said, "I think you'll do." Then turned to Chavo, "She's working here, keep your hands off of her."

Chavo made an obscene gesture towards the bartender and headed off to attend to the task Carlos had given him. On the way out he winked at the Cunni as if there was some secret connection between them. He thought to himself and chuckled, "Holy momma, such odd eyes...I'm going to have to get a better look at them."

"Who was that Senor?"

"That was Chavo, a bad hombre who thinks he is God's gift to women. If you're smart, you will avoid him. And you don't have to call me Senor, my name is Lee."

Runs With Stick nodded again, then looking down a bit said, "Will I have to serve him?"

"No, the senoritas handle the customers, all you have to do is cook."

"Gracias Sen, I mean Lee."

"By the way, what is your name?"

"The gringos call me Ruth."

"And what would you like to be called?"

"How about Angele?"

Lee smiled, "I like that, you have a job and a deal, Angele."
